CITY REGULATIONS

Garage and Yard Sales
Sales are limited to one 2-day sale in a 12-month period and require a city permit. Full details and permit applications are available at City Hall.

Building Permits
City building permits are required for the construction, demolition, or alteration of a structure or for the installation or alteration of any equipment regulated by the building department. When in doubt contact the building department at City Hall.

Open Fires
Open fired and the burning of trash and/or leaves are not permitted.

Parking
There are various local ordinances limiting parking including street sweeping, snow removal, and resident-only parking in certain areas. Look for parking information signs on utility poles on each block. On-street overnight parking for commercial vehicles is prohibited. Vehicles may not be parked on soft, unimproved ground.

Handicap Signs
Handicap signs must be applied for. Applications are available from the Police Department – 795-5600.

Property Up-Keep
Homeowners are expected to maintain their property in good condition and repair. Conditions such as peeling paint, unkempt grass, unsanitary storage of trash, etc, may subject the resident to citation by the city’s Department of Neighborhood Affairs or the Health Department.

Curfew
There is a 10:30 pm curfew Sunday through Thursday and an 11:30 pm curfew on Friday and Saturday for unaccompanied minors under 17. Full details may be found under the city ordinance 606.05.

Vehicle Stickers
City ordinance requires all Berwyn residents owning a motor vehicle to obtain a yearly vehicle sticker. New residents must purchase and display a Berwyn sticker within 60 days of establishing residency. The fee varies depending on the type vehicle, and senior citizens are allowed one free sticker per person and a maximum of two per family. Stickers are available from the Collector’s Office at City Hall during normal business hours (9am-5pm – Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; 9am-8pm – Tuesday). New residents must provide proof of residency (lease, deed, utility bill, etc.) along with current registration or title and driver’s license, and proof of insurance, at the time of application.

Pets
Dogs and cats are required to have an annual city pet license. License applications are available at City Hall. Be prepared to show proof of annual rabies vaccination at the time of application. There is also a three dog and/or two cats over 2 months old per premise occupied by one family or more.

There is also a leash law, and owners are required to pick up and properly dispose of pet waste when walking their pets.

Water Bills
Water bills are paid to the city quarterly. The cost of garbage pick-up is included with the water bill.

Trash and Yard Waste
Household trash is to be places in the brown trash cart provided to each home and trash is picked up weekly. Unsanitary trash disposal or accumulation is subject to a fine. A yard waste disposal program is in effect from April 1st through December 1st. Yard waste (leaves, grass, twigs, etc.) must be separated from other waste and places in a 32 gallon plastic or metal containers or in brown craft paper bags (not to be placed in the street). Bush and tree limbs must be no longer than 4 feet and tied with twine in bundles of 2 feet or less in diameter.

Disposal of large appliances or large quantities of building material must be coordinated with the Public Works Department at 749-4700. An additional fee may apply.

Recycling
Please use the green recycling container for newsprint, cardboard, aluminum, metal cans (remove paper labels), glass bottles, plastic milk or soda bottles, and various recyclable plastic containers. Full details on recycling and trash disposal are available from City Hall. Plastic bags and petroleum product containers will not be accepted. If you would like a recycle container, please contact Public Works Department at 749-4700.
